Some people build a wall, with pieces of their broken heart and with memories of all the times it hurt and everything that ever went wrong and how people abandoned them, used them, betrayed them etc. and try to hide their feelings, try to no longer feel anything, just to assure themselves that they will never feel pain again. Because pain is for the weak, right? They build a wall to see who will climb over it, but the truth is, no one really likes to climb walls. Plus, back in the days when the armies stormed a castle and tried to tear the wall down, it was not called 'love', it was called 'war', and no one really likes wars.
I used to think I knew a guy, who had a wall. I used to try to climb it, but I didn't even know where to place my feet and I'm not much of a climber. He used to tell me that he knew me. He knew me because I gave him the opportunity to get to know me, but to be quite frank, did I really know him? I had no clue, and how to get to know him, I did not know where to start. I only knew his wall, that seemed to get higher and higher. The whole purpose of a wall is to keep people out, so why try to climb a wall that's so high that you fear to find out what's on the other side. I don't think you're supposed to climb walls...
What does a wall symbolize/mean to you? (Yahoo answers)
I'm talking about any 'wall'...such as a fence (whether it surrounds a prison or a school playground), a wall (in a buildint, etc.), other walls (built to separate two/more groups, such as the Berlin Wall, prisons), other walls (walls put up to prevent people from falling into a hole in the road, etc.), mental walls (personal conflict, hate, etc.) . Any kind of physical OR mental barrier.
I'm really looking for two things:
1. Different kinds of physical/mental barriers
2. What they mean/symbolize, why they were built, your
opinions on them, etc.
This all comes down to the concept of separation: keeping one or more group away from something/each other.

So..keeping others out, privacy, barrier, restriction? Do you think it symbolizes strength?
It sure makes it easy to hide your feelings. Why would you want to show your feelings to anyone, anyway? What are feelings even good for? Showing feelings makes you vulnerable. Feelings make you weak. Showing someone your feelings gives them the opportunity to take advantage of those feelings and gives them the opportunity to take those feelings and toss them away whenever they please. Right?
Not really.
When sharing your feelings or thoughts you put a piece of yourself out there and you're actually saying: 'Here, this is me, this is what I am.' When someone shows you their feelings they are giving you the opportunity to get to know them and to come closer. Closer...
'Closer, where I can take your hand,
hold you in my arms,
lay a soft hand on your broken heart,
where we can both be ourselves.
Closer...'
I believe that it's very important to show each other our feelings. When someone smiles at you and you look them in the eyes and you see those warm eyes, it instantly makes them more approachable, doesn't it? It tells you: I should not be afraid. The same counts for crying...It always makes me think when I see someone cry that I never saw crying before, that always acted so tough : WOW, you'e human too. It's nice to know that someone is not perfect and that we all hurt the same.
..
I read that we tend to reflect the behavior of the people around us, it's a psychological thing. It's called mirroring, if I'm not mistaking. I think it also actually works that way that if someone else shows you their feelings, their weaknesses, that it makes you feel more comfortable about showing your own. It builds some sort of bridge between people, builds a connection.
We don't have to build walls.
We don't have to act so tough.
We don't have to hide our feelings.
We are all a great, big bunch of feelings and thoughts.
We're all human.
